THE United Nations (UN) Tanzania, in partnership with the South African High Commission commemorated Mandela International Day 2025 by dedicating 67 minutes of service to the National Children’s Home in Kurasini.

The event brought together UN staff, diplomatic representatives, development partners, and members of the South Africa–Tanzania Business Forum for a morning of meaningful volunteer work. Activities included cleaning, gardening, and assisting with kitchen operations—echoing Nelson Mandela’s enduring message: “It is in your hands.”

Marked annually on July 18, Nelson Mandela International Day encourages individuals and institutions around the world to spend at least 67 minutes in service to others—symbolizing the 67 years Mandela devoted to the struggle for human rights and social justice.

This year, the South Africa–Tanzania Business Forum went a step further by donating essential supplies to the children’s home, a gesture that embodied the spirit of Ubuntu and demonstrated the power of cross-sector collaboration.

In her remarks, UN Resident Coordinator Susan Ngongi Namondo highlighted the importance of service: "Today, we honour Madiba not only with our words but through action. Service—no matter how small—builds dignity, hope, and shared humanity. Today’s partnership speaks volumes about what we can achieve when we come together."

The commemoration stood as a powerful reminder of the impact of solidarity across borders and sectors in creating lasting, positive change—particularly for society’s most vulnerable.

As Mandela once reminded the world: "What counts in life is not the mere fact that we have lived. It is what difference we have made to the lives of others."

On this Mandela Day, the UN family in Tanzania, the South African High Commission, and their partners stood united—in service, in community, and in hope.
