Serengeti Breweries Limited (SBL) has today unveiled an ambitious new agribusiness initiative, Shamba ni Mali, aimed at addressing critical challenges faced by Tanzanian farmers, including the use of counterfeit farm inputs, outdated farming technologies, unpredictable weather patterns, and limited access to modern agricultural knowledge.

The program underscores SBL’s renewed commitment to supporting local agriculture by empowering over 4,000 smallholder farmers across the country, particularly those cultivating sorghum, barley, and maize—key raw materials in the company’s beer production.

Speaking during the launch, SBL Managing Director Obinna Anyalebechi highlighted the transformative goals of the program:

Shamba ni Mali is designed to create lasting value for both farmers and our business by ensuring sustainable sourcing, strengthening supply chain resilience, and improving farmer incomes. We aim to provide access to improved seed varieties, promote regenerative agriculture, and offer technical training to help farmers increase yields and improve livelihoods.”

A cornerstone of the initiative is inclusive sourcing, with targeted support for women, youth, and marginalized communities. Farmers will also benefit from regular extension services, structured engagement platforms, and access to formal contracts that ensure fair market opportunities.

Representing the Government of Tanzania, Gerald Mweli, Permanent Secretary at the Ministry of Agriculture, commended SBL for its alignment with the country’s broader development goals:

Shamba ni Mali supports the aspirations of the Agriculture Master Plan 2050, which envisions a sustainable, inclusive, and resilient agricultural sector that contributes to transforming Tanzania into a higher middle-income nation.”

The launch event drew participation from key government officials, private sector leaders, development partners, and stakeholders from across the agricultural value chain, marking a strong public-private collaboration toward national food security and economic empowerment.
