The High Commission of India in Tanzania has launched a new monthly initiative ‘Karibu Tanzanian Youth’ to strengthen the relationship between India and Tanzania by engaging young Tanzanian students.

The first session of this ongoing program saw a group of 30 students from the Academic International Secondary School, Dar es Salaam welcomed by the High Commission of India, Dar es Salaam on 25 October 2024.

During the interactions the Tanzanian students gained a deeper understanding of India, the role of the High Commission, and the historic ties between the two nations.

The presentations, delivered in Swahili by Tanzanian officials working at the Indian High Commission, gave the students a comprehensive overview of the High Commission’s role in fostering diplomatic, economic, and cultural ties between India and Tanzania.

Many students expressed that the session was informative and helped clarify what a High Commission is, why it is needed, and how the Indian High Commission is working to promote friendship and cooperation between the two countries.

The students were also given insights into the long-standing commercial, political, and educational relationships between India and Tanzania, which have been mutually beneficial.

They learned how these historic ties have contributed to the development of both nations, especially in areas such as healthcare, technology, and education, and how the High Commission plays a pivotal role in maintaining and building upon this strong foundation

As part of the orientation, the students had the opportunity to tour the High Commission, where they visited the High Commissioner’s office, observed how visas are processed and stamped and received a practical introduction to the High Commission's day-to-day operations.

Simon Hussein, representing the Principal, Academic International Secondary school, Dar es Salaam, expressed gratitude to the High Commission for organising such an enriching experience.

“We are thankful for this educational opportunity where our students could visit the High Commission, learn about its important work, and even enjoy Indian cuisine. This initiative has given them a firsthand understanding of the deep relationship between our two countries,” he said.

Nakiete Mlaki, a student, thanked the High Commission for organising such an insightful study tour.

“This session was very useful in helping us understand the purpose of a High Commission. We now see how important it is for India and Tanzania to have this connection, especially in promoting business, education, and cultural exchange.”

Bishwadip Dey, the High Commissioner of India, emphasised the significance of this initiative, stating “Our goal is to inspire Tanzanian students to become friends of India, who can share what they have learned about India and its relationship with Tanzania. We believe that through programs like this, we are building bridges of friendship and cooperation that will last for generations.”

He added: “This “Karibu Tanzanian Youth” initiative will now be held monthly, offering more Tanzanian students’ occasion to visit High Commission of India giving them the opportunity to participate, learn, and deepen their understanding of India’s culture and the vital role of diplomatic missions in fostering international relationships.
