Attorney General Hamza Johari has urged lawyers to exercise greater caution when providing legal advice on environmental matters for the benefit of the nation.
Johari, made the remarks today, September 3, 2025, while opening a training session for government lawyers on the environment sector held in the city, organized by the National Environment Management Council (NEMC).
He said the training would help government lawyers gain a deeper understanding of environmental management laws and procedures, familiarize themselves with the responsibilities of NEMC, and learn about legal fees and awards regulations.
He added that the training would strengthen their ability to provide legal advice and draft contracts related to environmental conservation and management in the country.
Furthermore, he noted that the government is continuing to review institutional frameworks to improve performance, and currently, a proposal is being processed to transform NEMC into the National Environment Management Authority (NEMA).
According to him, the aim of the reform is to enhance the authority’s legal mandate in implementing environmental policies and laws.
Earlier,NEMC Director General, Dr. Immaculate Semesi, said the training was organized to build a common understanding of environmental management laws in the country.
She further explained that limited awareness among stakeholders has been causing legal and regulatory conflicts between different institutions.
She said the training brings together lawyers from the Attorney General’s office and the Office of the Chief Parliamentary Draftsman.
