Cohort 9 opens doors for Tanzanian innovators

In the heart of Mwanza, a young woman codes late into the night, refining a mobile platform that connects farmers to real-time market prices.

In Mbeya, two friends sketch solar panel designs on the back of a receipt, hoping to light up rural homes.

In Dar es Salaam, a fintech founder holds her breath as she submits an application, knowing that the right support could take her solution from idea to industry.

These are not isolated stories. They are snapshots of a growing wave of entrepreneurial ambition sweeping across Tanzania—a wave powered by local challenges, bold ideas, and now, meaningful investment.

At the forefront of this movement is develoPPP Ventures, a programme implemented by DEG Impulse. Through its latest call for applications, it is now offering €100,000 in non-dilutive funding and strategic support to innovative Tanzanian start-ups.

With Cohort 9 open until June 30, 2025, this is more than a funding opportunity—it’s a chance to transform vision into real-world impact.

According to Jasmine Abdallah, Venture Lead & Marketing, since launching in 2022, develoPPP Ventures has supported 26 Tanzanian start-ups across key sectors—from clean energy and healthcare to insurance, agriculture, and sustainable finance.

“These ventures haven’t just grown their businesses,” she explains.

“They’ve expanded access to essential services, created jobs, and introduced solutions that are reshaping everyday life.”

Across Tanzania, Kenya, and Rwanda, the programme has received more than 2,000 applications, financed 82 start-ups (including 25 that secured follow-on investment), and mobilized over €40 million in additional capital.

She said the ripple effect is undeniable: over 3,700 decent jobs created and more than 10 million people with improved access to critical resources.

One standout example is Tembo, a Tanzanian fintech that empowers businesses to offer digital financial services.

With early support from develoPPP Ventures and $1 million in follow-on funding, Tembo scaled rapidly, boosting its transaction volume by 900 percent in just 12 months, from $2 million to $20 million.

This is what catalytic support looks like.

And this is the future we’re building—one venture, one breakthrough, one community at a time.
