PRESIDENT Samia Suluhu Hassan has described the late Judge Fredrick Werema as a steadfast leader who upheld ethics and principles throughout his career.
This assessment was given in remarks delivered by Prime Minister Kassim Majaliwa at a last respects ceremony for the late Werema at the Karimjee Grounds in Dar es Salaam yesterday.
The deceased (69) who passed away at the Mihimbili National Hospital on Monday will be laid to rest at his Butiama home village on Saturday.
The president expressed deep sorrow over the passing of Judge Werema, a past attorney general, from 2009 to 2014.
"Judge Werema was a distinguished lawyer and a true patriot who always offered sound legal advice," the remarks asserted.
"The late Werema worked across all branches of government and gained vast experience in public service. He accomplished many great things,” the president recalled.
In his other remarks, the premier urged lawyers and other professionals to build upon the positive work that the late Judge Werema did throughout his lifetime.
Former president Jakaya Kikwete paid tribute to Judge Werema, pointing at his distinguished career and public contributions.
"He achieved many great things for the country and left a lasting legacy. I appointed him as a judge based on his excellence in service," he told the mourners.
Attorney General Hamza Johari praised Judge Werema as a visionary and dedicated legal expert who played a pivotal role in ensuring justice and the rule of law were upheld, as essential to drive national development.
"Judge Werema engineered significant reforms in the legal system and greatly improved procedures for the rule of law. He mentored and uplifted young lawyers, demonstrating outstanding leadership in challenging times while advocating for the nation’s interests," he stated.
Joseph Warioba, a former prime minister and continental human rights court judge remembered Judge Werema for unwavering commitment to serving the public.
"Judge Werema was someone who stood firm in his beliefs. He was honest, reliable and served the nation to the fullest of his abilities," he remarked.
Dr Ally Possi, the government chief counsel, praised Judge Werema as a pillar of the country’s legal sector, still dedicated to law even after his administrative tenure ended.
"His strength in various areas of law and his dedication left a mark on the country's legal system," he added.
