A Mother who had been separated from her two-year-old child for six months has finally been reunited with the child, thanks to the Mama Samia Legal Aid Campaign spearheaded by the Ministry of Constitution and Legal Affairs at the just ended Dar es Salaam International Trade Fair (DITF).
The emotional reunion took place after Johari Ally, the mother, visited the ministry’s pavilion at the fair on July 10, 2025, seeking legal assistance. Her child had allegedly been taken by relatives of the child’s father and kept away from her for half a year.
Moved by her story, a panel of legal officers from the ministry, operating under the Mama Samia Legal Aid Campaign—acted swiftly. They instructed the relatives to appear at the fairgrounds the following day for a mediation session.
Following the legal team’s intervention and dialogue between the parties, the child was successfully returned to Ally. The panel advised the relatives that any future arrangements for visits must be done in agreement with the mother.
Speaking after the handover, Beatrice Mpembo, assistant director in the Department of Human Rights at the Ministry, described the process as legally complex but ultimately successful.
“It was not easy, but we were determined to resolve it through legal means. The laws of this country are clear—children of such tender age belong with their mothers. We are thankful the matter ended peacefully,” said Mpembo.
Overwhelmed with relief, Ally expressed heartfelt gratitude to the government and the Ministry of Constitution and Legal Affairs for launching the Mama Samia Legal Aid Campaign, which made it possible for her to regain custody of her child.
The ministry is participating in the 49th DITF to provide legal aid services and public education on legal rights. According to Mpembo, once the trade fair ends, citizens with unresolved legal issues can still seek support through the ministry.
