TANZANIANS have been urged to nurture a culture of voluntary tax compliance among children to ensure they become responsible citizens who contribute to national development.
Deputy Chief Kadhi of Tanzania and member of Ulamaa Council, Sheikh Ally Hamis Ngeruko, made the appeal in Dar es Salaam at the weekend during an Iftar event organised by the Tanzania Revenue Authority (TRA).
He emphasised that a nation’s stability and growth depends on the revenue collected from its citizens.
"Teaching children that paying taxes is a civic duty will ensure the country's continuous progress and stability," he said. He stressed that instilling the value from the tender age will help foster a sense of responsibility and patriotism among future generations.
Sheikh Ngeruko also encouraged citizens to pay their taxes willingly and honestly, noting that a well-funded government provides better services for all.
Yusuph Mwenda, TRA Commissioner General, highlighted the tangible benefits derived from taxation, underscoring its role in improving public services and infrastructure.
"We are gathered here in peace because we have security and protection, which are made possible by taxes. The roads we travelled on to get here were built with tax revenue, and the free education provided to our children is also funded by taxes. This is why we must all continue playing our part by contributing through taxation," he said.
Mwenda reaffirmed TRA’s commitment to supporting businesses growth while ensuring fair tax collection. He assured that no businesses would be unfairly burdened or forced to close due to taxation.
"Our goal is not to stifle businesses but to create a fair environment where all businesses thrive while contributing to national development," he stated.
On the importance of demanding for receipts, Mwenda urged people of all faiths, particularly during this Ramadan and Lent—when household expenses tend to rise—to always demand receipts when making purchases.
"Asking for receipts ensures that the government collects the right taxes, which ultimately benefits the entire country through improved services and infrastructure," he said.
He emphasised that TRA officials are committed to upholding fairness in tax collection, ensuring neither overcharging nor tax evasion occurs.
Mwenda called upon all citizens to embrace voluntary tax compliance, stressing its importance in building stronger and more prosperous Tanzania.
"It is important to prioritise our country’s development, and this can only be achieved when we fulfill our tax obligations, enabling the government to implement key projects," he said.
