LOCAL Government Authorities (LGAs) have been urged to ensure that health facilities stop charging pregnant mothers and children under five for medical services, in line with national health policy.

The directive was issued by the Vice Chairman of the ruling party (CCM) Mainland, Stephen Wasira, last Friday in Mbeya during the start of his four-day tour to inspect the implementation of the party's election manifesto.

Wasira emphasised that health policy prohibits charging pregnant mothers and children under five for medical services and urged government officials to enforce this policy at public health facilities.

"There have been complaints from citizens about being charged for these services, which is against the regulations. We will no longer accept such complaints. Councils must ensure that this policy is fully implemented," said Wasira.

He noted that the government has allocated significant funds to improve healthcare infrastructure and purchase medical supplies and equipment, so there is no reason for citizens to continue facing these challenges.

"The government has made substantial investments in the health sector to ensure free access to maternal and child healthcare. Any facility found violating this policy will be held accountable," he added.

Wasira’s visit to Mbeya followed a similar tour of Songwe Region, where he also inspected various development projects and held public meetings.
