Hamza has been a near-constant presence, amassing over 950 minutes across 11 appearances in this CAF Confederation Cup campaign.

THE air is thick with anticipation as the 2024/2025 CAF Confederation Cup approaches its grand crescendo. Tonight, the formidable Moroccan outfit RS Berkane will welcome Tanzania's Simba SC to their daunting Municipal Stadium for the crucial first leg of the final.

Amidst the collective ambition of continental glory, a pivotal individual battle is anticipated to unfold between Simba's young, resolute centre-back, Abdulrazack Hamza, and RS Berkane's prolific, experienced striker, Oussamma Lamlioui.

Their confrontation promises to be a captivating subplot, potentially shaping the destiny of this crucial first encounter.

Drawing upon their stellar performances throughout this season's demanding continental campaign, their impending battle promises to be a fascinating microcosm of the larger war for supremacy.

For Simba, reaching this final is a momentous occasion, their first major African final in 32 years, igniting a wave of national pride in Tanzania. Their journey has been a testament to grit, tactical discipline, and, crucially, defensive solidity.

At the heart of this rearguard action has been 22-year-old Hamza. Since joining Wekundu wa Msimbazi in July 2024, the Tanzanian international has rapidly established himself as a key component in coach Fadlu Davids' defensive architecture.

Hamza has been a near-constant presence, amassing over 950 minutes across 11 appearances in this CAF Confederation Cup campaign.

Simba’s path was fraught with challenges that truly tested their defensive mettle. They impressively topped their group with 13 points, but it was in the knockout stages that their resilience truly shone.

Against Egypt's Al Masry in the quarter-finals, after a 2-0 away defeat, Simba, roared on by their home crowd, produced a stunning 2-0 victory before triumphing 4-1 in the ensuing penalty shootout.

Hamza, alongside defensive partners Chamou Karaboue, Shomari Kapombe and skipper Mohamed Husseini, was instrumental in keeping a vital clean sheet in that high-pressure home leg.

This resilience was again paramount in the semi-finals against South Africa’s Stellenbosch FC. A hard-earned 1-0 victory at home, courtesy of a disciplined team performance, was followed by a masterful defensive display in the 0-0 away draw in Durban, effectively frustrating their opponents and securing their passage.

While goalkeeper Moussa Camara earned plaudits for crucial saves, the collective effort of the backline, with Hamza playing his part, was undeniable in achieving these results, showcasing their ability to absorb pressure and maintain compactness under duress.

Standing in stark opposition to Hamza and Simba's defensive aspirations is RS Berkane's 29-year-old Moroccan international, Lamlioui.

A seasoned centre-forward, Lamlioui has been the cutting edge of a Berkane side renowned for its continental prowess and formidable home record.

The Oranges are no strangers to this stage, having lifted the Confederation Cup trophy in 2020 and 2022, and their current campaign has seen Lamlioui emerge as a talismanic figure, particularly when the stakes are highest.

His contributions in the knockout phases have been nothing short of spectacular. It was Lamlioui’s decisive 75th-minute strike in the quarter-final second leg against ASEC Mimosas that broke the deadlock and sealed a 1-0 win, propelling Berkane into the semi-finals with a 2-0 aggregate score.

He then elevated his performance further in the semi-final first leg against Algeria's CS Constantine. In a stunning display of firepower at home, Berkane triumphed 4-0, with Lamlioui netting an impressive brace and providing an assist, effectively dismantling their opponents and paving their way to the final despite a narrow 1-0 loss in the return leg.

Throughout the 2024/2025 CAF Confederation Cup, Lamlioui has five crucial goals and one assist in eight appearances, underscoring his lethal efficiency and importance to coach Moine Chaabani’s game plan.

Thus, the stage is set for a classic confrontation: Hamza, the young guardian embodying Simba's defensive fortitude and fearless mindset, against Lamlioui, the experienced goal-poacher, riding a wave of confidence and backed by a vociferous home crowd.

The tactical chess match will be intriguing. Simba, under Davids, have demonstrated an ability to adapt, often employing a pragmatic and disciplined approach away from home.

Hamza will be tasked with not only his individual responsibilities of marking Lamlioui which include tracking his runs, challenging him in the air, and preventing him from finding shooting opportunities but also with maintaining the overall organisation of the defensive line.

This will be particularly challenging given Berkane’s attacking flair and the intimidating atmosphere of the Municipal Stadium.

For RS Berkane, playing at home first is an opportunity to seize the initiative.

Coach Chaabani, a respected tactician, will undoubtedly look to unleash his attacking forces, with Lamlioui as the focal point. The striker's ability to find space in crowded penalty areas, his clinical finishing, and his knack for scoring crucial goals make him a constant menace.

The battle will likely be physical, demanding immense concentration from Hamza, who must avoid being drawn out of position or committing errors under pressure.

Psychologically, both players face unique pressures. Hamza, despite his youth, has shown remarkable composure, but a final of this magnitude, away from home, against such a prolific striker, presents his sternest test yet. Lamlioui, on the other hand, will be buoyed by his recent form and the weight of expectation from the home supporters, driving him to make a decisive impact.

While the spotlight may be on this central duel, the supporting cast will play vital roles. Hamza will rely on communication with his fellow defenders and the protection offered by Simba's midfield. Similarly, Lamlioui's effectiveness will depend on the quality of service from Berkane's creative players and wingers.

Ultimately, the outcome of the Hamza-Lamlioui duel could significantly sway the first leg. If Hamza and the Simba defence can successfully neutralize Berkane's primary attacking threat, it would lay a strong foundation for the return leg in Dar es Salaam or Zanzibar.

However, should Lamlioui continue his remarkable goal-scoring exploits, RS Berkane could take a significant step towards claiming their third CAF Confederation Cup title.
