AZAM FC claimed the top spot in the Premier League with a gritty 2-1 victory over hosts Dodoma Jiji at Jamhuri Stadium on Sunday evening.

The hard-fought win propelled Azam to the league summit with 30 points from 13 games, two points clear of Simba SC, who have two games in hand.

Reacting to the result, Azam head coach Rachid Taoussi praised his players' resilience, describing the performance as a testament to their strong mentality in a challenging encounter.

“This victory is significant because it wasn’t easy. Dodoma Jiji are a good team with quality players and they performed well in the first half. But our players demonstrated great determination and mentality,” said the Moroccan tactician.

Taoussi highlighted the strategic adjustments made during the game: “We trailed 1-0, and it was a precarious moment because Dodoma could have scored a second goal.

“However, our players stayed disciplined and followed our instructions. We focused on using the wings, which proved effective as both goals came from wing play.”

He further elaborated on the tactical approach: “In the second half, we asked the players to stay calm and adapt to the pitch conditions, which weren’t ideal. We bypassed the midfield when necessary and capitalized on our strengths.

“Nassoro Saadun, who was outstanding and deserved the Man of the Match award, scored a crucial goal. Gibril Sillah also played exceptionally well, alongside the entire team.”

Taoussi dedicated the victory to Azam’s supporters and board while expressing optimism about maintaining the team's momentum: “We are thrilled to be at the top of the standings. Although Yanga and Simba have games in hand, we’ll enjoy this moment.

“If we keep up this form, we can stay in first place. Our team has strong cohesion between the technical bench and players. To become champions, we must continue working hard.”

Azam’s next fixture is a Federation Cup 64th-round match against regional side Iringa Sports FC on Saturday evening.

They will then face a challenging Premier League clash away to Tabora United on Friday, December 13, at Ali Hassan Mwinyi Stadium in Tabora.
