YAS and Mixx joined sports stakeholders in supporting the Lake Victoria Half Marathon in Mwanza, using the event to promote community development, social responsibility, and athletic excellence.

Speaking at the marathon, Robert Sanyagi, YAS’s Acting Zonal Director for the Lake Zone, said the race goes beyond competition.  “This marathon carries a greater purpose - to support premature babies at Sekou Toure and Bugando Referral Hospitals who need specialized care,” he said.

Sanyagi highlighted that over 120 children are born prematurely each month in these hospitals, and initiatives like the marathon help ease medical costs while giving families hope.

He also underscored the marathon’s contribution to Mwanza’s local economy.  “The event benefits nutrition programs for mothers, beverage vendors, transport operators, hotels, and businesses in sports and advertising. Sports is a powerful driver of social and economic development,” he said.

On the technology front, Sanyagi emphasized YAS and Mixx’s role in leveraging innovation to drive positive community impact. “Our 4G and 5G networks connect people across the Lake Zone Region, while digital financial services like 'Lipa kwa Simu' make transactions easier. Sports and technology together can build health, unity, and opportunity.”

He reaffirmed the company's commitment to the marathon. “On behalf of YAS and Mixx, I congratulate all participants. For those who didn’t win today, participation itself is a victory - you have contributed to saving lives and strengthening our community. Together, we are shaping a new chapter in sports, technology, and social development.”

Hilda Vigo, Coordinator of the Lake Victoria Half Marathon, thanked YAS and Mixx for their support.  “Their contribution has been vital in helping premature babies and boosting Mwanza’s economy. We look forward to continuing this partnership for many years to come,” she said.

The Lake Victoria Half Marathon remains a key platform for uniting communities, sports stakeholders, and the private sector in promoting sustainable development through sports and social action.
