Upanga Titans triumph in 2025 VFU Cup tourney

DAR ES SALAAM's Upanga Titans volleyballers have kept on adding trophies to their cabinet, having triumphed in the 2025 VFU Cup in the city recently.

The showpiece was hosted by the Friends United Volleyball Team, aiming to raise volleyball standards in Tanzania.

Seventeen outfits featured in the 2025 VFU Cup were grouped into A and B.

Upanga Titans Volleyball Team, according to one of the team's senior players Ashish Kamania, finished second in Group A to book their place in the knockout phase of the showdown

The squad garnered a win in six outings and drew two games to collect 20 points. The squad secured 231 points and conceded 106 points.

The Upanga Titans Volleyball Team were one of three outfits which ended the group phase without losing a game.

Even though Group A leader, Evening Stars, had similar wins and draws, they had a higher number of points earned.

Evening Stars had won 261 points and let in 81 points, further taking pride in finishing the group phase with no loss.

Hindu Union garnered Group A's third place, coming out victorious in four ties and drawing four games.

The third-placed team, which moreover had not suffered a loss in the phase, collected 210 points and conceded 102 points.

Fourth-placed Annadil Burhani also made it to the knockout phase, boasting victory in four ties, a draw in one, and a loss in three encounters.

Group B leaders, Young Muslims A, came out victorious in five matches and drew two to collect 17 points.

Upanga Titans Warriors took Group B's second spot, having won four encounters, posted a draw in two and suffered defeat in one.

Third-placed Vamshala Volleyball Team Orange wound up the group phase encouragingly, coming out victorious in four ties, garnering one draw and losing two ties.

Evening Stars Green wrapped up the knockout phase contenders' list, taking fourth place in Group B following the side's three wins and four draws.

Two of the last eight phase encounters took place at the Hindu Union ground, and the other two were played at the Vamshala Volleyball Team ground.

The last-eight phase saw Upanga Titans garner a convincing 2-0 victory over Vamshala Volleyball Team Orange in the best-of-three sets match to secure progression to the last-four phase.

In the other quarterfinals, Annadil Burhani took on Young Muslims A, and Hindu Union confronted Upanga Titans Warriors.

Hindu Union were Upanga Titans' opponents in the last-four phase clash, which ended with Upanga Titans comfortably grabbing a 2-0 victory to cruise to the final.

The final was hardly plain sailing for Upanga Titans' volleyballers, who came up against Evening Stars who set up an impressive record in the group phase.

Kamania disclosed that the closely contested final culminated with Upanga Titans garnering a 2-1 victory over Evening Stars to lay their hands on the trophy.

The 2025 VFU Cup tourney's eventual winners had, in April, won the East Africa Open 2025 title in Mombasa, Kenya.

Various sponsors including Jalaram Bhakt, DIY, VL Smart Solutions, Alpha Auto Spares, Titan, Munchies, Elegant Law Chambers, Murtaza Gulamhussein, Geeta Enterprises, Mitul Babulal, Riyaz Ahmed, Swaroop Kankipati, Samuel Shine, ACD Pharmacy Ltd, Hajis Cash N' Carry, Aatish Associates, and Harun Sajan supported the tournament.

United Pharmacy, Diya Enterprises, Alpha, Alfa Zulu Travel & Tours, MOBi DOC, Bugle Catering, Capt Morgan, Deepak Auto Spares, Karibu Tanzanite Jewellers Ltd, Timz Corner, Top Trips Travel Limited, Assad Associates, UC Unity Computers, Hall of Fades Barber Shop, Saagar Hair Dressing Salon, and C& G Car and General moreover put their weight behind the showdown.
