THE Bishop-elect of the Mwanga Diocese of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in Tanzania (ELCT), Dr Daniel Mono, has urged Tanzanians to reject politicians who seek to buy votes in the upcoming 2025 General Election.
Speaking during a memorial service in Usangi, Mwanga District, following the arrival of the late former Prime Minister and First Vice President Cleopa Msuya’s body, Dr Mono cautioned voters against falling for financial inducements from candidates focused on personal gains.
“Today, we face two kinds of leaders: those who ask what they will gain, and those who ask what they will leave behind,” Dr Mono said. “We must choose wisely and not sell our freedom for short-term gains.”
He emphasised the importance of integrity and values, urging citizens to draw inspiration from Msuya’s legacy of service.
“Our father Msuya taught us integrity, truth, and responsibility. Let us uphold those values as we head into the 2025 elections,” he said. “Voters must understand their worth and refuse to be misled by politicians who disappear once elected.”
Dr Mono also criticised the hypocrisy of public figures who make appearances in churches without living by the faith they profess.
“Be content with your salaries,” he said. “Stop attending places of worship for showing up. Live consistently—whether in church or in public office. Msuya lived an authentic life. Emulate him.”
The body of Cleopa Msuya, who passed away at the age of 94, arrived in Kilimanjaro on May 12 at around 9:30 a.m. via a special flight from Dar es Salaam.
A military convoy escorted the casket along the Arusha–Moshi highway to CD Msuya grounds in Usangi, where mourners from across Tanzania and abroad gathered to pay their last respects.
ELCT Karagwe Diocese Bishop, Dr Benson Bagonza, also spoke at the service, calling on Tanzanians to live responsibly and patriotically, following Msuya’s example.
Former Prime Minister Mizengo Pinda described Msuya as a principled leader who never shied away from speaking the truth, even when it was unpopular.
“He was bold, honest, and visionary—always speaking truth to the authority, no matter the cost,” Pinda said. “I echo Bishop Mono’s call: Tanzanians, do not sell your votes. Leaders must be judged by their records and attitudes, not by how much they hand out.”
Pinda stressed that true leadership is about impact and legacy—not money or empty promises.
