NATIONAL League for Democracy (NLD) presidential candidate Doyo Hassan Doyo has declared that it is a "national embarrassment" for Tanzania, a country rich in vast and unique mineral resources, to be weighed down by abject poverty.
Speaking yesterday at a campaign rally in Sengerema District, Geita Region —a hub for mineral wealth—Doyo vowed that if elected in the October 29 General Election, he would ensure the nation’s natural endowment directly translates into prosperity for its citizens.
Doyo stated that the country's abundance resources, including gold, diamonds and tanzanite, should guarantee better living standards, not the current reality where communities lack clean water, reliable healthcare and good roads.
“It is a shame that we sit on mountains of wealth while our people still lack basic services. This must change,” Doyo asserted to cheering supporters.
The NLD candidate also focused heavily on the Doyo promised, pledging to create transparent and profitable markets for agricultural produce. He sharply criticized the current system that forces farmers to sell their crops at exploitative prices that fail to cover their high production costs.
“If you trust me with your votes on October 29, I will fight to ensure farmers secure good prices and real incentives for their crops,” Doyo promised. He characterized the low pricing as a "deliberate trap to keep you poor so that CCM continues to rule you and your generations."
Addressing the transport and infrastructure sectors, Doyo highlighted that poor road networks significantly raise operational costs for drivers and transport operators, stifling their profitability. He argued that the government's practice of collecting heavy taxes from transport businesses while neglecting the road system is unjust. “Infrastructure must work for the people,” he added.
Throughout his speech, Doyo accused CCM of failing to resolve fundamental social and economic challenges despite its long tenure in power. He listed several unresolved issues facing residents of Sengerema and Buseresere in Geita. These challenges include: poor road conditions and high transport costs; lack of essential medicines and medical equipment in health facilities; shortages of clean and safe water; and inability of farmers to access sustainable and profitable markets.
Doyo urged Tanzanians to reject "repeated promises that have never been fulfilled." He concluded his rally by stressing that addressing these issues would be central to his administration’s agenda, calling on citizens to demand accountability and vote for a leadership that ensures Tanzania's vast natural wealth directly benefits its entire population.
