POLICE in Dodoma have launched a targeted operation to combat the growing issue of mobile phone theft and have called on phone vendors and repair technicians to avoid stolen goods.

Regional Police Commander George Katabazi issued the warning during   stakeholders meeting held over the weekend with phone sellers, technicians, and representatives from the Tanzania Communications Regulatory Authority (TCRA). The meeting aimed to develop concrete strategies for curbing phone-related crimes.

The crackdown follows the recent arrest of Jonas Richard, who was found with 11 laptops, 24 mobile phones, and three television sets—items suspected to have been   stolen. Three other known suspects, often referred to as “Winga,” were also arrested for their alleged involvement in trading stolen mobile devices.

Commander Katabazi emphasised the police   resolve to eliminate mobile phone theft, expressing hope that such engagements would lead to significant combating  crime, including burglary and illegal trade, which continue to damage the city’s reputation.
