TANZANIA will continue to strengthen its long-standing cooperation with India for the mutual benefit of both nations, Vice President Dr Philip Mpango said yesterday.

Speaking in Dar es Salaam during a meeting with India’s Deputy Minister of Defence, Sanjay Seth Dr Mpango highlighted President Samia Suluhu Hassan’s state visit to India in October 2023 as a pivotal moment that reinforced bilateral ties.

He noted that defence collaboration remains strong, with ongoing reciprocal visits by military officials, joint training programmes, and enhanced operational coordination. Among the key areas of cooperation are counter-terrorism training, anti-piracy operations, joint rescue missions, and coordinated naval patrols.

The Vice President also commended the joint military exercise currently underway, involving naval forces from Tanzania, India, and other African countries. The exercise includes a defence exhibition showcasing modern military equipment and technology.

Beyond defence, Dr Mpango acknowledged India’s consistent support in sectors such as healthcare, education, water, and transportation, which continue to contribute to Tanzania’s socio-economic development.

Deputy Minister Seth described Tanzania as a reliable and strategic partner, particularly in trade, investment, water, health, and education. He revealed that Tanzania is India’s second-largest trading partner in Africa, with trade volumes expected to reach USD 8 billion in the 2024/2025 fiscal year.

He also thanked the Tanzanian government for hosting joint naval training exercises and the defence equipment exhibition featuring India and partner African nations.

The meeting was attended by Minister of Defence and National Service, Dr Stergomena Tax, Indian High Commissioner to Tanzania, Bishwadip Dey and senior defence officials from both countries.
