RESIDENTS and traders in the Lake Zone have complained about the suspension of MV Victoria ferry services between Mwanza and Bukoba in Kagera Region for over a week without notice.
One of the residents, Helena Benjamin, told this paper that the disruption has affected transportation of goods between the two regions.
"People prepare to transport goods using the affordable ferry services only to find it out of service, forcing them to travel by road at higher costs," she said.
She added that the ferry is crucial for moving goods and passengers, and the unannounced suspension had caused losses, especially for food traders.
Another resident, Mussa Yusto, shared similar concerns, blaming poor communication.
"We understand technical issues can arise, but the problem is the lack of communication and prolonged repairs. Traders and passengers who rely on the ferry are the most affected," he said.
Anselm Namala, Tanzania Shipping Corporation (TASHICO) head of marketing and public relations, confirmed that the ferry suspended services on March 4, 2025 for scheduled maintenance.
"The new Victoria ‘Hapa Kazi Tu’ ferry is undergoing routine annual maintenance after a year of service. We scheduled the repairs because it’s a low season for travellers," he said.
He acknowledged the inconvenience and urged passengers to be patient as repairs are underway.
Namala said the ferry, the largest on Lake Victoria with a capacity of 1,200 passengers and 200 tonnes of cargo, will resume operations soon.
Capt. Samson Mwita, TASHICO’s safety and environmental supervisor, said the maintenance ensures the ferry’s systems remain safe.
"The inspection was initially scheduled for December 2024, but high travel demand and delayed delivery of some spare parts forced us to postpone it," he said.
