IN observance of World Tree Planting Day, the Rotary Club of Kijitonyama took a significant step toward environmental conservation by planting 250 trees at Mapambano and Shekilango Primary Schools in Dar es Salaam.
The club's president, Diana Mawalla, explained that the initiative aims not only to address the ongoing challenges of climate change but also to instill a deeper sense of environmental responsibility among young children.
The tree planting exercise, held on the school grounds, is part of a broader effort to promote sustainable practices and raise awareness about the importance of preserving the planet for future generations.
"Our goal is to plant 1,000 trees in Kinondoni to send a strong message to the public about the importance of tree planting and environmental conservation," said Mawalla. "We believe that everyone, from students to the general public, has a role to play in tackling climate change."
Students were actively involved in the planting process, receiving guidance from Rotary members and teachers.
Dorice Msigalo, the headteacher at Shekilango Primary School, highlighted the educational value of the activity, noting that it complements the environmental studies taught in the classroom.
"Tree planting is not only a fun and hands-on experience for the children, but it also reinforces what they learn in class about the environment and its protection," Msigalo explained. "This practical experience makes the lesson much more tangible."
The students themselves were enthusiastic about the event. Saimam Ali, a student at Shekilango, expressed her excitement after participating in the planting.
"This exercise helped me understand the importance of planting trees and taking care of the environment," said Ali. "I now see that small actions like planting a tree can have a big impact on our world."
The tree planting event also aligns with Rotary International's global mission to address pressing environmental issues, including deforestation, climate change, and biodiversity loss.
Mawala emphasized that this initiative is just one of many that the Rotary Club of Kijitonyama plans to undertake in the coming months.
"We hope to inspire both young and old to take action in their communities," she added. "By planting trees, we are not only helping to combat climate change but also creating a more sustainable future for all."
