THE Chief of Staff of the Tanzania People’s Defence Force (TPDF), Lieutenant General Salum Hajj Othman , has emphasized the importance of strengthening regional and international cooperation in promoting peace and security across the globe.

He made the remarks  during a colouful ceremony held in Dar es Salaam yesterday while congratulating officers and soldiers of the Military Police unit who recently returned to Tanzania after successfully completing their peacekeeping mission in Lebanon.

Lieutenant General Othman said peace and security were responsibilities that transcend national borders  and therefore, nations must work together to address emerging global threats.

He stressed that the experiences gained from international missions such as the United Nations Interim Force in Lebanon (UNIFIL) play a crucial role in enhancing the operational capacity and professionalism of the Tanzanian military.

Lieutenant general Othman commended the returning contingent for their outstanding discipline, patriotism, and dedication throughout their deployment.

He noted that their exemplary performance had brought great honor not only to the Tanzania People’s Defence Force but also to the entire nation.

“You have been true ambassadors of Tanzania,” he said.

“Your commitment, courage, and professionalism have demonstrated to the world the high standards of our Defence Force. I congratulate each one of you for representing our country with dignity and integrity during your mission abroad,"he added.

He further urged the officers and soldiers to use the knowledge and experience gained during their mission to improve operations at home.

He noted that  international exposure provides an opportunity to learn from other forces, adapt new technologies, and strengthen coordination mechanisms that are vital for maintaining peace and stability both within and beyond Tanzania’s borders.

Lieutenant General Othman also highlighted that Tanzania’s continued participation in global peacekeeping efforts reflects the country’s unwavering commitment to international solidarity and the pursuit of peaceful coexistence.

He reiterated the government’s dedication to supporting such missions, emphasizing that peacekeeping not only fosters global harmony but also enhances the skills and capabilities of Tanzanian troops.

The returning contingent served under the UNIFIL mission in southern Lebanon, where they played a vital role in supporting efforts to maintain peace and security in conflict-affected areas.

Their duties included patrols, protection of civilians, and cooperation with other international forces operating under the United Nations mandate.

As they return home, the peacekeepers are expected to share the valuable experience gained abroad with their colleagues and contribute further to strengthening Tanzania’s role in regional and international peace initiatives.
