FKF Women's Premier League Most Valuable Player (MVP) Lydia ‘Ozil’ Akoth has signed for Tanzanian outfit Yanga Princess ahead of the ongoing Tanzania Mainland Women’s Premier League.
The midfielder (pictured), who derives her nickname from her awe-inspiring dribbling, guided Kenyan champions Police Bullets FC to their maiden league title last season in what was their debut season in the top flight.
With the mid-season transfer window opening on Friday, January 17, and set to close on Friday, February 14, the defending champions are expected to bolster the squad ahead of the second leg, looking to fill Akoth’s massive shoes.
On her way to being named MVP, the former Wadadia and Zetech Sparks ace scored eight goals and provided ten assists in 18 matches, leading the Law Enforcers to victory in an unbeaten run.
Akoth, who joined Bullets from Women’s National League side Gaspo Women, went on to propel the Beldine Odemba-coached side to the final of the CECAFA Zonal qualifiers for the CAF Women’s Champions League, where they narrowly lost 1-0 to Commercial Bank of Ethiopia (CBE).
The Law Enforcers had their sights set on becoming the second Kenyan team to qualify for the continental showpiece following Vihiga Queens' success in 2021, falling short against the experienced Ethiopians who had lost to Vihiga three years before.
‘Ozil’ made her Harambee Starlets debut in October last year as her then-club coach, Odemba, named a squad for the invitational Pink Ladies Cup held at the Emirhan Stadium in Antalya, Türkiye.
Before then, she had last donned the national team jersey in 2021 with the Under-20 team, Rising Starlets, during the 2022 FIFA U20 Women's World Cup first-round qualifying matches, where the team was eliminated early by Uganda in a 10-3 aggregate.
Yanga Queens, who are yet to win the women's title despite being behind Simba Queens and JKT Queens, are currently building their squad for the ongoing season.
