TABORA United will be hoping to continue their fairy-tale season when they host Kagera Sugar this afternoon at the Ali Hassan Mwinyi Stadium in the last 16 of the Federation Cup.

The hosts have been one of the most inspiring stories of Tanzanian football this term, sitting proudly in 5th place in the Mainland Premier League standings.

It is a remarkable achievement considering they only secured survival last season through the relegation playoffs.

Tabora United have not only cemented themselves as a competitive side but also guaranteed their place in next season’s top flight, joining an elite group of just five teams assured of safety at this stage.

However, their recent league form has been a cause for concern, with just one win in their last five matches, alongside three draws and one defeat.

Nevertheless, they will take heart from their head-to-head record against Kagera Sugar this season, having beaten them twice - most recently in February with a hard-fought 2-1 win at Kaitaba Stadium.

Newly appointed Zimbabwean head coach Genesis Mangombe will aim to start his tenure on a winning note as he takes charge for the first time.

Kagera Sugar, conversely, find themselves embroiled in a fierce relegation battle, positioned third from bottom and four points adrift of safety with seven games remaining.

Given their precarious league situation, they are likely to prioritize survival over a deep cup run. It wouldn't be surprising to see a somewhat weakened lineup, with an eye towards their crucial Thursday league fixture against Coastal Union.

Nevertheless, Kagera Sugar arrive with a renewed sense of optimism under the stewardship of their former goalkeeper, Juma Kaseja.

His appointment has sparked a three-game unbeaten streak, suggesting a potential resurgence.

The Missenyi outfit advanced to the last 16 of the Federation Cup following a 3-0 win against Namungo in the round of 32 back in early this month which was preceded by a 2-1 home victory over Pamba Jiji in the Premier League.

Before the two back-to-back victories, Kaseja, who took over from Melis Medo, began his tenure with a barren draw against KMC.

Whether this newfound momentum will be enough to overcome a determined Tabora United, in front of their home fans, remains to be seen.
