PRIME Minister Kassim Majaliwa has praised the Sixth Phase Government under President Samia Suluhu Hassan for ushering in major reforms in Tanzania’s sports sector, in line with Article 243 of the ruling CCM’s 2020 Election Manifesto.
Speaking during the national sports awards ceremony held Sunday night at The Super Dome in Masaki, Dar es Salaam, Majaliwa noted that the sports sector has registered historic gains, including a significant increase in the ministry’s budget - from Sh285 billion in 2024/2025 to Sh519 billion for the 2025/2026 fiscal year.
“This is the highest budget allocation ever for the Ministry of Culture, Arts and Sports,” the Prime Minister said, adding that the government remains committed to advancing sports at every level.
He emphasized that sports development is a shared responsibility involving players, agents, sponsors, and the private sector, all of whom must work together to grow the industry.
“We must applaud President Samia for unlocking opportunities, expanding the sports budget, and encouraging private sector participation,” he said.
Majaliwa described the national sports awards as a strategic initiative aimed at motivating athletes and elevating sports standards nationally and internationally.
“These awards are not mere celebrations - they are part of a broader effort to inspire growth and excellence in sports,” he stated.
He noted that the awards recognize the efforts of athletes, coaches, teams, and other stakeholders who raise Tanzania’s profile on the global stage, while also fostering a culture of positive competition and inspiring children to engage in sports.
“Sports are about health, employment, entertainment, and unity,” he said. “These awards send a clear message that sports are a respectable and productive endeavor. They also encourage parents and communities to support children in athletic pursuits.”
The Prime Minister added that the awards fuel hope and pride, and play a critical role in shaping the future of sports in Tanzania.
“We must sustain and improve this initiative as a tool for long-term sectoral development,” he said.
Information, Culture, Arts and Sports Minister, Prof. Palamagamba Kabudi, also thanked President Samia for her unwavering support of the sports sector.
“We’ve all witnessed her dedication to advancing Tanzanian sports,” he said.
Prof. Kabudi noted that under the current administration, Tanzanian national teams are participating in global tournaments for the first time, while local football clubs have also made strong showings in African competitions.
Earlier, The National Sports Council (NSC) Secretary General Neema Msitha said the awards, now in their third season, are meant to recognize top-performing athletes at international events.
She added that the selection process involved various recognized sports associations and federations.
