Minister of State in the Prime Minister’s Office, Labour, Employment, and Persons with Disabilities, Ridhiwani Kikwete has emphasized the critical importance of adhering to occupational health and safety laws and guidelines.
Speaking during the closure of the International Occupational Health and Safety week, minister Kikwete noted that compliance of laws and regulation not only protects workers but also boosts investor confidence and enhances long-term business sustainability in Tanzania.
On her part, Occupational Safety and Health Authority (OSHA) Chief Executive Officer Khadija Mwenda expressed appreciation to all participants—employers and employees alike—for their continued dedication to health and safety practices at workplaces.
She emphasized that this commitment contributes to greater productivity and is vital for national economic growth.
Representing Barrick at the awards ceremony, North Mara Safety Superintendent Meshack Issack reiterated the company’s commitment to partnering with the government in protecting the health of its workforce.
He highlighted how safety remains a strategic pillar of the largest mining company, driving productivity, efficiency, and better decision-making across its mining operations.
The gold mining company won ten prestigious awards reflecting the company's unwavering focus on safety excellence, innovation, and inclusive practices.
They also follow last year’s strong performance when the company walked away with five awards, including the overall winner’s trophy.
The repeated success is a clear indication of the company’s consistent dedication to upholding high standards in occupational health and safety.
He said the company continues to invest in cutting-edge digital and smart technologies as part of its ambitious “Journey to Zero” initiative, aimed at eliminating all workplace and off-duty accidents.
Moreover, the company has been a front-runner in implementing Tanzania’s Local Content Policy, which promotes employment and business opportunities for Tanzanians throughout its operations.
The mining giant’s Bulyanhulu Mine stole the spotlight by winning the overall award in the Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) category.
The mine also secured multiple other accolades that highlighted its exemplary standards in health and safety, including recognition for advancing high-risk mining operations, best narrator for effective presentations during the exhibitions, and the coveted Occupational Health and Safety (OHS) Innovator Award.
