Tanzania is expected to reduce number of post-consumer glass waste through recycling, following the signing of the strategic partnership between beverage producers.

This strategic partnership comes at a crucial time when waste management and environmental conservation are becoming top national priorities. The initiative will address the growing challenge of post-consumer glass waste management, while creating a long-term, sustainable solution that supports both environmental protection and economic empowerment.

The partnership model, signed by Petpro and Tanzania Breweries Limited aims to significantly reduce the amount of glass waste ending up in landfills, boost nationwide recycling rates, and build a more circular glass economy for manufacturers nationwide.

By turning waste glass into valuable raw materials, the program will directly contribute to Tanzania’s national sustainability goals and align with TBL’s 2025 Sustainability Roadmap.

Speaking at the event, brewery firm’s Managing Director Michelle Kilpin said: “This partnership with PETPRO is a blueprint for how manufacturers can be elevate their role in driving environmental and economic impact. We are excited at the prospect to transform waste into opportunity, empowering local communities, and protecting our planet for future generations. Ultimately, we hope that this initiative will become a platform to enhance Producer Responsibility within the industry, through collaboration with other manufacturers, as we harness our collective capabilities to deliver even more impact.”

The PETPRO Managing Director Nicholaus Jackson stated: “Through this collaboration, we are setting a new model for glass recycling in Tanzania. Our combined expertise will ensure we collect, process, and return glass to the production cycle at scale, proving that sustainable practices can deliver both environmental conservation and economic opportunities. Together, we are building a cleaner, more resilient future.”

Beyond environmental benefits, the project is expected to create economic opportunities for waste collectors, recyclers, and manufacturers across Tanzania.

By establishing a steady demand for recovered glass, the program will help generate income for thousands of individuals involved in the recycling value chain, particularly in underserved communities.

PETPRO’s expertise in recycling logistics, combined with TBL’s extensive distribution network, will make it possible to recover and process glass at a scale.

Furthermore, the collaboration lays the foundation for more partnership within the industry and also will serve as a model for other sectors to follow, demonstrating that environmental responsibility and business growth can go hand in hand.

This MOU cements the partners’ position as pioneers in Tanzania’s transition to a circular economy. The two companies are committed to working closely with government agencies, local authorities, and industry players to refine the model and expand its reach.
