NMB Bank Plc has been ranked among the Top 40 Banks in Africa, earning recognition as the Number One bank in Tanzania, the only Tanzanian bank in the Top 5 in East Africa, according to African Business Magazine’s 2025 rankings.
The prestigious rankings were based on a comprehensive analysis of total capital, total assets, and net profits, highlighting the bank’s solid financial foundation, growth momentum and operational excellence.
The recognition highlights NMB’s consistent rise as one of Africa’s most resilient and dynamic financial institutions, built on strong fundamentals, robust governance, and disciplined execution of a long-term growth strategy.
The ranking was based on total capital, total assets, and profitability, confirming the Bank’s strength and sustainability in a challenging regional and global environment.
As of June 2025, NMB’s total assets exceeded 14trn/-, supported by a solid capital base, strong liquidity, and a five-year annual growth rate of more than 30 percent in net profits.
The Bank’s return on equity remains one of the highest in the region, indicating efficient capital allocation and sound management practices.
These achievements stem from the successful implementation of the 2021–2025 Medium-Term Plan, which prioritised financial inclusion, digital transformation, operational efficiency, and sustainability.
Today, more than 96 percent of all customer transactions occur outside branches, which is the positive impact of strategic investment in technology and customer experience.
Beyond financial performance, NMB continues to lead in responsible banking and sustainability.
In 2021, NMB Bank made history as the first bank in Africa to issue a Gender Bond, a groundbreaking initiative that reinforced its commitment to inclusive finance and women’s economic empowerment.
The achievement earned NMB global recognition as the Platinum Winner of the Sustainable Bond of the Year, awarded by the International Finance Corporation (IFC) and the Global SME Finance Forum — a testament to the bank’s leadership in driving sustainable and equitable growth across the continent.
NMB has also received international recognition, including becoming the first bank in the region to be named Africa’s Best for Sustainability award by Euromoney, the Top Employer certification for workplace excellence, and the prestigious EDGE Certification for gender equality, becoming the first African bank to achieve this milestone.
Commenting on the achievement, Ruth Zaipuna, Managing Director & Chief Executive Officer of NMB Bank Plc, said: “This recognition represents the strength of our strategy, the resilience of our people, and the trust our customers place in us. It is a proud moment for Tanzania and a reminder of our responsibility to keep building a world-class financial institution that delivers sustainable value for all stakeholders.”
As it concludes its current strategic cycle and prepares for the next phase, NMB's focus remains clear to continue shaping the future of banking through sustainability, technology, and Service excellence.
“We dedicate this achievement to every stakeholder who has walked this journey with us,” said the bank in a public statement.
“Together, we are not only building a bank but also transforming lives and shaping a stronger financial future for Tanzania and the region”.
