As the world commemorates World Day for Safety and Health at Work under the theme “The Role of Artificial Intelligence and Digital Technologies in Enhancing Safety and Health at the Workplace,” Orica Tanzania, a company engaged in the manufacturing and supply of explosives for mining operations, has called on companies to prioritize workplace safety to prevent accidents caused by explosives.
Speaking at the ongoing National Commemoration of World Safety and Health at Work Week in the Singida Region, Boaz Samwel, Orica’s Explosives Engineer, emphasized that explosives pose a significant risk in mining and can cause serious harm if not used according to proper safety guidelines.
"Through this exhibition, we have showcased modern technology that utilizes Artificial Intelligence to enable blasting operations to be carried out safely and efficiently, without causing harm. With this technology, blasting can be done effectively and safely without any human presence near the blast site," said Samwel.
"Unlike in the past, technology has significantly transformed the entire blasting process, making the job easier and much safer, with the top priority being the protection of human life, the environment, and operational efficiency."
He added that to minimize and eliminate risks in mining environments, Orica — in addition to being a manufacturer and supplier of explosives — also provides expert advice on the proper use of safe blasting technologies, while fully complying with the regulations and guidelines of the Occupational Safety and Health Authority (OSHA).
Boaz mentioned several AI-powered technologies currently in use, including BlastIQ, ORBS, 4D, RHINO, OREPro 3D, ENVIROTrack, FRAGTrack, and GroundProbe. These systems are capable of detecting and monitoring changes in rock conditions in real time, allowing for immediate alerts and the prevention of accidents such as rockfalls.
He described this investment as a major milestone in the mining sector, which continues to evolve through digitalization and innovation.
Offering a broader perspective on Orica Tanzania’s commitment, Daniel Paul, Human Resources Specialist for Orica’s Southern Africa Region — speaking on behalf of Engineer Asha Mambo, Territory Manager for Orica Tanzania — stated:
"At Orica Tanzania, we believe that safety, health, and employee wellbeing are fundamental pillars of our business success. As part of Orica Limited, a global leader in commercial explosives, blasting systems, and mining services operating in more than 100 countries, we are committed to maintaining the highest safety standards — both in our operational practices and organizational policies."
He further emphasized that safety is not the responsibility of a few but a shared obligation among all stakeholders — a belief that continues to strengthen Orica Tanzania’s long-term success and resilience.
Orica operates in over 100 countries and brings over 150 years of experience to the industry.
Various organizations and companies participated in the week-long exhibition.
Speaking during the closing ceremony, Ridhiwani Kikwete, Minister of State in the Prime Minister’s Office for Labour, Youth, Employment, and Persons with Disabilities, urged participants to intensify their efforts toward ensuring the safety of workers and to make it a top priority in all their operations.
