FIVE secondary schools in Dar es Salaam benefit from a Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM) initiative designed to help them keep up with global technological advances.
Prof. Thierry S. Nouidui,Deputy Vice-Chancellor Academics, Research, and Consultancy at the United African University of Tanzania (UAUT), made the announcement at the weekend during the opening of a STEM competition for pupils from six secondary schools.
Nooidui explained that the programme aims to prepare pupils for future careers in STEM fields, equipping them with critical thinking, problem-solving and creativity skills. Over 500 pupils along with their teachers have participated in the programme.
The participating schools are Azania, Kibasila, Jangwani, Pugu, and Benjamin Mkapa secondary schools.
He acknowledged the challenges countries like Tanzania face in keeping up with rapid technological changes. “Today, we have organized this STEM and ICT programme because we believe STEM is crucial for our country’s development,” he said. Nooidui expressed hope that the programme would provide pupils with better education, advanced opportunities and prepare them to become future leaders.
“We want to change our pupils into leaders who will transform Africa and the world,” he said.
He also highlighted the importance of mathematics, stressing that every pupil must be equipped with information technology skills to succeed in today’s world. UAUT Principal Jin Ki Hwang echoed Nooidui’s sentiments, emphasizing that academic and professional education could turn challenges into opportunities.
“We truly hope to build a prosperous future together,” he added.
Chelsea Mfuko, a pupil at Jangwani Secondary School, said the STEM programme is essential as the world rapidly advances in technology.
She noted that the training would help pupils adapt to global changes, including emerging technologies like artificial intelligence.
Washington Jacoba, a pupil at Pugu Secondary School, shared similar thoughts, stating that the programme would help pupils cope with the rapid pace of technological change. He warned that without embracing new technologies, the nation risks being left behind.
