VIBINDO Society, the national umbrella association representing over 50,000 small business owners and small industries across the country, has reached a digitalization milestone with the launch of its official website.
Speaking in Dar es Salaam during the launch, Vibindo Society Chairman Gaston Kikuwi said the association is committed to enhancing the livelihoods of informal sector operators across Tanzania. He highlighted that the new platform will help address challenges such as financial constraints and market access, ensuring that members have the necessary tools and support to succeed.
"The launch of our official website marks a significant step in our mission to empower informal sector operators across Tanzania. With this platform, we aim to tackle key challenges, from financial constraints to market access, ensuring every member has the tools and support needed to thrive," Kikuwi stated.
He added, "Our services are tailored to meet the specific needs of our community, and our commitment to advocacy ensures a favorable business environment for all."
Thabit Massa, Dar es Salaam Region Trade Officer, reaffirmed the administration's support for small businesses, noting that the initiative aligns with President Samia Suluhu Hassan’s vision of strengthening the informal sector.
"The government is dedicated to creating an enabling environment for small businesses to thrive. The launch of Vibindo Society’s website is a crucial step in enhancing accessibility to resources, financial opportunities, and market linkages," Massa said. "We will continue working closely with the association to ensure informal sector operators receive the necessary support to grow and contribute to the national economy."
He further emphasized that digital tools are increasingly essential in today’s world, allowing businesses to access information, connect with stakeholders, and operate more efficiently at both local and global levels.
Glory Blasio, National Programme Coordinator at the International Labour Organisation (ILO), highlighted the significance of the informal sector in employment, referencing the 2020/21 Integrated Labour Force Survey (ILFS), which shows that the sector contributes about 29 percent of total employment. Additionally, a 2019 study by the National Bureau of Statistics (NBS) indicates that the informal sector accounts for 22.5 percent of Dar es Salaam’s GDP.
“We have partnered with the National Economic Empowerment Council (NEEC) to develop a guide for formalization pathways in Tanzania Mainland. This practical tool enables micro, small, and medium enterprises to formalize their businesses based on their scale and mode of operation—whether as sole proprietorships, partnerships, cooperatives, or companies with shareholders,” Blasio stated.
VIBINDO Society remains committed to supporting informal sector operators across Tanzania by providing essential resources, advocacy, and digital tools to foster business growth and sustainability.
