INDIVIDUALS engaging in criminal activities will now be easily detected through the newly installed CCTV surveillance system across the capital, authorities say.

Rosemary Senyamule, the regional commissioner issued the warning on Tuesday on a while inspection tour of the cameras installation project, urging residents to respect the law, as the surveillance systems placed at key road intersections and entry points ease detection of criminal activities

A section of the city residents need to change their behaviour to respect the law and explicit regulations covering various public activities, as anyone caught on camera committing offences will face legal action, she stated.

The government’s investment in the surveillance systems was designed to control crime, boosting confidence among investors and visitors, she said, underlining the transformation of the capital into a secure and modern city.

It will be a vital step in cementing Dodoma’s role as the nation’s administrative capital, as the project will enhance the image of the city, making Dodoma safer and more attractive for investment and tourism, she said.

“I call upon the public to protect this infrastructure as it has been built for their own benefit,” she said, while Jabir Shekimweri, the district commissioner, said of the surveillance system as a landmark achievement in the government’s effort to ensure peace and security.

The project, billed at 473m/-, directly supports the government’s vision of making Dodoma a model capital, he stated, helping to make Dodoma a safe, investor-friendly and tourist-attractive city.

“This is part of the government’s commitment to build confidence among local and foreign stakeholders,” he said, noting that implementation stands at 90 percent, with the surveillance system covering the four major roads leading in and out of Dodoma city.

In total, 106 high-tech cameras have been mounted on 50 poles strategically positioned in different parts of the city. The cameras, equipped with artificial intelligence, take high-definition images that can be used by security agencies in real-time crime prevention and detection, he stated.

The three-month project was executed within the set period, demonstrating the government’s determination to adopt technological solutions to urban security challenges. Officials believe that once fully operational, the CCTV network will drastically reduce incidents of theft, vandalism and other unlawful activities.

As Dodoma grows as Tanzania’s political and administrative hub, the surveillance system is expected to play a crucial role in safeguarding investments, deterring criminals and enhancing the city’s reputation as a safe and welcoming destination, the DC added.
