A FREE cataract surgery camp has restored sight for hundreds of residents across Iringa Region.
The joint initiative by Helen Keller International and the government aims to combat preventable blindness, particularly in low-income and rural communities where high cost of treatment is a major obstacle.
The camp, held at Isimani Health Centre, is a crucial part of a national strategy to eliminate avoidable blindness. It provides comprehensive care, including screenings, consultations and surgeries, all at no cost to patients.
Sarah Bouchie, President and CEO of Helen Keller International, highlighted the organization’s long-standing commitment to Tanzania’s progress. "We’ve been working in Tanzania for over 40 years, supporting government priorities," she said. Bouchie explained that to overcome logistical barriers, the organization has adopted a proactive door-to-door approach to identify patients and arrange their transport to the camp.
Dr Greater Mande, National Eye Care Programme Officer at the Ministry of Health, praised the initiative for its profound impact. She noted that with cataract surgery typically costing up to 300,000/- this free service is truly life-changing for many. The camp also strengthens the local healthcare system by training professionals and donating medical equipment.
The impact was illustrated by Francis Mbambaga, a 51-year-old farmer whose poor vision had prevented him from working. "I couldn't believe I'd see again—especially without paying a cent," he said after his surgery. "I'm so thankful for this service."
Government leaders also voiced their support. William Lukuvi, Minister of State in the Prime Minister’s Office (Policy, Parliamentary Affairs and Coordination), commended the effort, while Iringa Regional Commissioner Kheri James emphasized the importance of public-private partnerships in addressing the region's shortage of ophthalmologists.
With over 700 patients slated for surgery, the camp is a vital step toward Tanzania's national goal of eliminating avoidable blindness by 2030.
