THE government has allocated 55.9m/-for construction of 24 modern toilet stalls at Mirongoine Primary School in Arusha District Council in Arusha Region as part of an ongoing effort to improve sanitation infrastructure in public schools.

The announcement was made yesterday by Arusha District Council Chairman, Ojung’u Salekwa, during a site inspection by the council’s Finance, Governance and Planning Committee. The visit was part of a routine assessment of development projects for the third quarter of the 2024/2025 financial year.

Committee members expressed satisfaction with the pace and quality of the projects while calling on technical staff and supervisors to swiftly address minor challenges to ensure on-time completion.

Among the projects inspected was the renovation of eight classrooms and the construction of 12 new toilet stalls at Laroi Primary School. That project carries a budget of 76m/-.

The committee also toured the nearly completed mortuary at Oljoro Health Centre. Funded through the council’s internal revenue, the mortuary is expected to cost 40m/- upon completion.

Freddy Ezekiel, Councillor for Mateves Ward and Vice Chairperson of the council, emphasized the need for close monitoring by the engineering department to ensure timely delivery and optimal community benefit.

Baraka Simeon, Councillor for Olturoto Ward, praised the district’s technical team for effective oversight and urged construction committees to maintain high standards of quality in all ongoing works.

His counterpart from Olturumet Ward, Joseph Tinayo, called on residents to support engineers and contractors during project implementation, noting that the community will ultimately be responsible for safeguarding the infrastructure.

Dr Petro Mboya, Acting Executive Director of Arusha District Council and the district’s Chief Medical Officer, expressed gratitude to the committee for its oversight and pledged to act promptly on its recommendations.
