Glory of Christ Tanzania Church, has lodged a case at the High Court, Dodoma Zone, requesting a temporary order to lift the government’s suspension of its religious activities
The case attracted nearly 500 bishops who gathered to follow the proceedings.
The legal move aims to protect the church’s registration status as an appeal challenging the government’s ban continues to be heard.
The church is led by Bishop Josephat Gwajima, who also serves as the Member of Parliament for Kawe under the ruling Chama Cha Mapinduzi (CCM) party.
Recently, the government closed down the church, citing violations of its registration terms. Authorities allege that the church has been conducting activities that are excessively political, contrary to the original objectives under which it was registered.
Representing the church, Advocate Peter Kibatala said the matter, filed as Civil Case No. 13189 of 2025, names the Inspector General of Police (IGP), the Attorney General, and the Registrar of Civil Societies as respondents.
The church is seeking a temporary court order that would allow it to resume worship and other religious services while the appeal against the government’s decision is still pending determination.
