JOURNALISTS in Mbeya Region have urged police to ensure their protection while carrying out their duties for them to serve the public freely and in accordance with the law.

The call was made yesterday during a debate on protection and security of journalists organised jointly by the Mbeya Press Club (MBPC) and the Union of Tanzania Press Clubs (UTPC).

The debate brought together journalists from various media outlets, police officers, religious leaders, parliamentary and councillorship candidates, lawyers and leaders of civil society organisations.

Pastor Erica Mwakyokile emphasised that journalists serve as a vital link between the government and society and must be protected from harm.

“Police have a responsibility to protect citizens and their property. Journalists are among the most important stakeholders as even the police rely on them. I sincerely ask that they be safeguarded while performing their duties,” said Mwakyokile.

Ibrahimu Mwakwama, a parliamentary candidate for Uyole Constituency through CUF, advised journalists to take personal precautions while seeking protection from authorities.

“During the upcoming General Election, political parties and candidates will depend on journalists to inform the public. We must all participate in ensuring their safety so they can perform their duties professionally,” he said.

Mbeya Regional Police Commander, SACP Benjamin Kuzaga, assured that police would keep journalists safe. He also urged them to carry valid work IDs and wear identifiable reflector jackets when reporting, particularly in areas of potential conflict.

“The government has introduced procedures for journalists to obtain ID cards. It is also important that we recognise one another while performing our duties,” he said.

MBPC Vice Chairman Joseph Mwaisango called on journalists to avoid instigating violence through media and instead use their platforms to educate and inform the public responsibly.
