MASWA District Commissioner, Dr Vincent Anney has called on the Seventh-day Adventist Church to lead efforts in educating youth against gambling, which he said is undermining the country’s productive workforce.
Speaking at the close of a two-week public evangelism event, Dr Anney said many young people today are turning away from work, spending time loitering or engaging in sports betting instead.
“Visit the villages and you’ll see women and the elderly toiling in the fields—but not the youth. Churches must step in by offering training that encourages youth to work and start small businesses so they can be self-reliant,” he said.
Dr Anney also urged the church to invest in health and education infrastructure to strengthen its presence and serve its members better. “I haven’t seen any Adventist-run nursery or secondary schools here in Maswa, nor any health facilities. If the church wants to thrive, it must invest in these vital sectors,” he added.
Pastor Clevarent Otieno, secretary of the Simiyu River Field (SRF), said the church is committed to expanding its mission by establishing churches in every village and ward, alongside building schools and health centres.
Evangelist Boniphace Kuhoka urged parents to raise their children with strong morals and prepare them for responsible adulthood. “Fathers, love your wives, build homes, and leave a legacy for your children. Educate them, instill Godly values, and teach them to be hardworking and accountable,” Kuhoka said.
