MINISTER for Natural Resources and Tourism, Dr Pindi Chana, has inaugurated the National Forest Advisory Committee (NAFAC), which will provide guidance on various issues related to forestry sector, particularly in addressing challenges related to encroachment.

Speaking during inauguration in Iringa yesterday, she said the committee will advise the minister on matters such as forest leasing, declaration of forest reserves, management of forest reserves, forest policy reviews, and any other issues requiring clarification from the minister.

Dr Chana stated that the formation of the committee reflects the importance of forests in Tanzania as a key pillar of economic development and their contribution to the national economy.

"Forest resources are estimated to contribute 3.5 percent to the GDP and 10 percent of export trade. Additionally, the forestry sector accounts for about 3 percent of formal employment in the country, while informal employment in the sector supports approximately three million people. Forests also play a significant role in the national economy by supplying over 75 percent of construction materials," she said.

Dr Chana further explained that forests are crucial for mitigating climate change, conserving medicinal trees, providing shade and wildlife habitats, and serving as water sources for various uses.

Prof. Jumanne Maghembe, NAFAC Chairman, expressed gratitude for his appointment and pledged to work diligently to ensure sustainable conservation of forests.

"Thank you for the guidance and resources. We are ready to take on this responsibility, especially during this period when the government is focused on transitioning to clean energy and reducing the use of charcoal derived from forests," he said.

Bernard Marcelline, Director of Administration and Human Resource Management in the Ministry of Natural Resources and Tourism,, congratulated the committee on its appointment and stressed its role in enhancing forest conservation in the country.
