THE National Development Corporation (NDC) and the Tanzania Forest Fund (TAFF) have signed a contract worth 402m/- to establish a rubber tree plantation in Kilombero District, Morogoro Region.

The agreement, signed yesterday in Dar es Salaam, covers a 402-hectare plantation in the Kalunga area and aims to boost local production of rubber while promoting environmental conservation. The deal was signed by NDC Acting Managing Director Dr Yohana Mtoni and TAFF Acting Chief Executive Officer Dr Tuli Salum.

According to the agreement, TAFF will disburse 200m/- for the first phase of the project and 202m/-for the second phase, both dedicated to planting rubber trees.

Speaking after the signing ceremony, Dr Mtoni said the grant would serve as a development catalyst by enabling the production of high-quality rubber trees and enhancing farming infrastructure. The funding will also support training for NDC staff and community members around the plantation.

“This project directly benefits the people of Kilombero by creating jobs, strengthening domestic production, and increasing national income through the rubber industry,” he said.

He added that surrounding communities—including Chita, Idete, Michenga, and Mchombe villages will play a vital role in the project’s implementation. Their involvement includes nursery management, planting and maintaining trees, and receiving education on the economic and environmental benefits of rubber trees.

Dr Mtoni noted that the project will contribute to environmental sustainability. Rubber trees, which take years to mature, help conserve land, reduce soil erosion, and promote clean air.

Dr Salum thanked the government for continuing to support TAFF’s conservation initiatives. She highlighted TAFF’s role since its inception in 2010, stating that the fund operates in all 26 mainland regions and focuses on supporting forestry development.

“We received 394 applications from stakeholders in 2024, and among those selected was NDC,” said Dr Salum. “We urge NDC to implement the project as agreed, and we look forward to seeing a fully developed 402-hectare rubber farm in Kilombero.” She emphasized the importance of accountability, urging all beneficiaries to use the allocated funds solely for the intended purpose of forest development.
