ZANZIBAR President Dr Hussein Ali Mwinyi has urged both religious leaders and citizens to prioritise strengthening community bonds and contribute to the well-being of others.

Speaking yesterday at the Eid al-Fitr celebrations on the islands, Dr Mwinyi emphasised that giving Zakat and other forms of charity is not only a religious obligation but also a vital practice that fosters unity, compassion, and mutual support within the community.

“We are taught that the act of giving purifies the soul, brings kindness, and builds a society based on love, unity, and solidarity. These are the values that our society needs to thrive and achieve success,” he said.

He further stressed the importance of thanking Allah for maintaining peace and granting the ability to observe fasting and other religious duties in tranquillity during the blessed month of Ramadan.

He took the opportunity to express gratitude to non-Muslim communities for their significant support towards their Muslim counterparts during the fasting period.

In light of the upcoming General Election in October, Dr Mwinyi urged citizens to preserve peace and continue working together for the prosperity of the nation. “We pray to Allah to guide us through the challenges of the election process, and may we remain united for the benefit of both present and future generations,” he added.

With safety a key concern during the festive period, the president also called on relevant authorities to ensure security in public spaces and along roads.

He underscored the need for strict adherence to road safety laws to prevent accidents, particularly during the busy holiday season.

He also emphasised that everyone has a responsibility to ensure the safety of children in the public spaces, thus promoting peace and happiness for all citizens.

Earlier in the day, Dr Mwinyi participated in the special Eid prayers at the Zinjibar Mosque in Mazizini in the outskirts of Zanzibar. The event was attended by government officials, religious leaders and a large number of worshippers, reflecting the spirit of unity and celebration that defines the holiday.
