THE renowned 'Royal Tour' film, featuring President Samia Suluhu Hassan and aimed at promoting tourism, has significantly increased tourist arrivals at Serengeti National Park, bringing substantial economic benefits to the region.
Alex Choya, chief conservation officer and acting head of tourism at Serengeti National Park, confirmed the development yesterday while briefing journalists during a visit to the park. Choya noted a "flood" of tourists flocking to the park since the film's release, eager to experience Serengeti's diverse attractions firsthand.
He stated that since the film's premiere on May 7, 2022, in Zanzibar, followed by its launch in the United States, Serengeti National Park has welcomed a staggering 1,334,054 visitors. Of these, 976,094 were foreign nationals, while 357,960 were domestic tourists, indicating a broad appeal for the park's offerings.
In another encouraging trend, Choya highlighted a notable surge in visits from leaders of various religious denominations. Recently, 149 bishops and pastors from Adventists, Muslims, and indigenous religious communities have toured the park.
He expressed inspiration at this growing interest from religious figures, emphasising its potential to serve as a catalyst for other Tanzanians to explore the country's rich natural heritage. He urged citizens to take pride in and protect these resources for both present and future generations.
Among the international visitors was Pranav Patel from California, USA, who toured with his family. Patel stated that his decision to visit Serengeti was primarily driven by its reputation as one of the world's few premier national parks.
He added that Serengeti's global renown was the main reason he and his family chose to witness its wonders firsthand.
Serengeti National Park is Tanzania's third-largest protected area, spanning 14,763 square kilometers. It is preceded in size only by the Nyerere National Park (formerly Selous Game Reserve) and Ruaha National Park, the second largest.
The significant increase in visitors underscores the powerful impact of the 'Royal Tour' film in showcasing Tanzania's natural beauty and conservation success on a global stage.
