CCM presidential candidate Samia Suluhu Hassan, has pledged to construct a new airport in Njombe Region to facilitate the transportation of high-value crops, particularly avocados and tea, to domestic and international markets.
Addressing a campaign rally yesterday here, Samia said the government had already initiated the process of establishing the airport as part of broader efforts to unlock the region’s agricultural and economic potential.
She emphasised that the project would make it easier for farmers to access lucrative export markets, thereby boosting household incomes and strengthening the local economy.
To complement this, Samia outlined a comprehensive agricultural support package aimed at ensuring farmers benefit fully from market opportunities. This includes the construction of 50 fruit storage centres across the country, recruitment of specialist extension officers dedicated to avocado farming, and the provision of subsidies for organic fertilisers and pesticides. “We want to bring real transformation in agriculture by making sure our farmers not only produce but also get the right support and access to profitable markets,” she said.
She further highlighted strategic infrastructure and mining projects intended to stimulate Njombe’s growth. She pledged the government’s commitment to completing the Itoni–Manda road, a key transport corridor that will ease the movement of mineral raw materials. She further disclosed that mining operations at the Liganga and Mchuchuma projects — long awaited for their potential to transform Tanzania’s industrial base — would soon commence officially.
Parliamentary candidates representing Njombe constituencies — including Deo Mwanyika (Njombe Urban), Rebecca Nsemwa (Special Seats), Joseph Kamonga (Ludewa) and Edwin Swalle (Lupembe) — praised the progress made under President Samia’s leadership, particularly in expanding access to water, electricity, health services and agriculture. However, they noted that challenges in road networks and volatility in the tea industry remain pressing concerns that need stronger interventions.
Cholastica Kevela, Chairperson of CCM Women Wing in Njombe commended the government’s achievements over the past five years.
