THE Guardian Ltd, publisher of Nipashe and The Guardian newspapers, has donated 2,000 tree seedlings to support the government's afforestation and environmental conservation efforts in Mwanza City.
Out of the total, 200 seedlings were handed over and planted today at Luchechele Primary School.
The tree-planting exercise was led by Nipashe journalist Vitus Audax, the winner of the Samia Awards in the category of Outstanding Environmental Reporting, in collaboration with the Office of the Nyamagana District Commissioner.
Speaking after planting the trees, Vitus Audax said the company’s aim in donating the seedlings is to give back to the community—especially in appreciation of what the government offered through the awards, which included 20 tree seedlings.
Nyamagana District Commissioner Amina Makilagi commended the company for setting a positive example in environmental conservation.
She also stated that the trees will be planted at the new Camesema Primary School, adding that the initiative has helped promote awareness about environmental care.
She further noted that the district continues to implement the goal of planting 1.5 million trees in collaboration with stakeholders, who have been actively involved in tree planting and establishing nurseries in various areas.
