POOR accountability and lack of passion for studying are major reasons why many students are discontinued from degree programmes in higher learning institutions, a university don has said.

Dr Mkabwa Lawrence Manoko, Principal of the College of Agriculture and Food Technology (CoAF) at the University of Dar es Salaam, made the remarks in Dar es Salaam over the weekend at the university’s business campus while addressing students registered with CGK Africa as part of their learning programme.

“Many university students skip lectures, fail to complete coursework and practical assignments, and lack interest in self-study,” Dr Manoko noted.

He stressed that accountability is key to academic success, adding that poor time management and lack of focus often lead to poor performance, preventing students from achieving their short-, medium-, and long-term goals.

Benjamin Munyao, CEO of Davis & Shirtliff Tanzania, also spoke at the event, emphasising the power of passion and accountability in driving success.

“Many organisations, including start-ups, fail to grow due to poor accountability among owners and staff,” Munyao said. “Passion, focus, and accountability build confidence and pride, which in turn drive growth and sustainability.”

He urged students to take full responsibility for their decisions and actions to succeed in both personal and professional life.

Naomi Nana, managing director of CGK Africa, said the training session—titled “Driving Passion and Accountability at Work for Economic Development”—is the third of its kind this year. The programme aims to foster professional growth and leadership skills, equipping students with entrepreneurial knowledge for career development.

CGK Africa focuses on three key areas—mentorship and coaching – providing capacity-building and financial literacy training, business support – assisting start-ups and small businesses through investments in collaboration with Afri-Capital Investment Ltd and Sumaria Group and employment facilitation – helping young people secure jobs to develop their careers.
