MEDIA practitioners have received training on identifying and tackling gendered disinformation, as part of a new initiative by Zaina Foundation ahead of the upcoming elections.
Under the project titled “Upholding Integrity: Countering Gender Disinformation in Tanzania’s Electoral Process”, the Foundation in Dar es Salaam today July 12, 2025, held a capacity-building workshop to equip participants with tools to monitor, report, and counter harmful narratives targeting women in media and politics.
Zaina Foundation Executive Director Zaituni Njovu, said the training is designed to empower participants with practical tools and knowledge to effectively address the growing challenge of online attacks targeting women in politics and the media.
“Women in politics and media are often disproportionately targeted by false, harmful narratives online. This workshop empowers them with tools and knowledge to respond effectively,” she said.
The initiative also involves developing digital awareness messages and analyzing Tanzania’s legal frameworks on gendered disinformation. Participants described the session as timely, calling for broader regional collaboration in addressing the issue.
Zaina Foundation plans to expand the programme to reach more journalists and civil society actors, reinforcing efforts to uphold electoral integrity and safeguard inclusive participation.
