DEPUTY Speaker of the National Assembly Mussa Azzan Zungu has advised the government, through the Tanzania Railways Corporation (TRC), to adjust the schedule of the Standard Gauge Railway (SGR) trains so that the first train from Dar es Salaam arrives in Dodoma by 7:30 a.m.
Zungu made the remarks in Parliament today, June 5, shortly after the Prime Minister’s Question and Answer session with Kassim Majaliwa.
He praised the government's commitment to infrastructure development and revealed that TRC plans to introduce a train that will cover the Dar es Salaam–Dodoma route in just 2 hours and 45 minutes.
“This is highly commendable under the leadership of President Samia Suluhu Hassan,” Zungu said. “But I appeal to the Prime Minister to ensure that the first train arrives in Dodoma at 7:30 a.m., and similarly, the first train into Dar es Salaam should also arrive by that time.”
He added that such a move would not only strengthen the national economy but also enable government officials to attend official duties promptly.
Responding earlier to a question from Special Seats MP Asha Abdulah Juma (Mshua), Prime Minister Majaliwa said the government, through TRC, plans to increase the number of SGR trips to meet growing demand.
“The plan is in place. TRC has already written to me about increasing the number of trips. We're aiming for four trains to and from Dodoma, and we also plan to introduce an express service,” said Majaliwa.
