THE government has reaffirmed its commitment to strengthening ties with China, particularly in promoting cultural exchanges aimed at boosting Tanzania's film industry.

Dr. Damas Ndumbaro, Tanzania’s Minister of Culture, Arts, and Sports, highlighted this commitment in Dar es Salaam over the weekend during the launch of a Chinese-Tanzania co-produced television series, Welcome to Milele.

Dr. Ndumbaro emphasized that Tanzania and China have maintained a long-standing, amicable relationship across various domains—social, economic, political, and cultural. This special bond dates back to the era of the founding fathers of both nations, the late Julius Kambarage Nyerere of Tanzania and Chairman Mao Zedong of China.

“The cultural relationship has fostered vibrant exchanges in art, literature, and education, which has not only supported the co-production and distribution of films but also led to the establishment of the Confucius Institute in Tanzania. This institute plays a crucial role in promoting the learning of the Chinese language and culture,” he said.

“We reiterate our commitment towards strengthening these relations in all aspects.”

The minister further noted the Kiswahili version of Welcome to Milele, which features prominent Chinese and African actors. Filmed in both Tanzania and China, the series portrays the experiences of a Chinese medical team working in Africa and their close friendships with local communities.

“The ongoing collaboration has allowed for the co-production and distribution of films, enabling Tanzanian films to be shown in China and vice versa,” he added.

Reflecting on the six decades of partnership, Dr. Ndumbaro underlined that the deepening friendship between the two nations has yielded significant benefits. This cooperation has enhanced the skills and knowledge of Tanzanian film experts, managers, theatrical groups, and other film industry practitioners.

Chinese Ambassador to Tanzania, Chen Mingjian, noted that the launch of the series coincides with the 60th anniversary of China's first medical team deployment abroad and the establishment of diplomatic relations between China and Tanzania.

During the filming in Africa, the crew received a warm welcome from Zanzibar’s President Hussein Ali Mwinyi and President Samia Suluhu Hassan. Leading actor Jin Dong was even honored with the title of Tourism and Cultural Ambassador for Tanzania.

The TV series is currently being broadcast on Azam Television until November 29th.

“In 2022, President Samia Suluhu Hassan and President Xi Jinping announced the elevation of the countries’ ties to a comprehensive strategic partnership, aimed at boosting all-around cooperation and setting a model for China-Africa cooperation in the new era. Additionally, with the 60th anniversary of diplomatic relations, 2024 has been designated as the Year of Culture and Tourism between China and Tanzania,” said Chen.

Yahya Mohammed, CEO of Azam Television, expressed his enthusiasm for the partnership. “Choosing Azam is a significant recognition of our commitment to supporting the China-Tanzania partnership. We look forward to seeing the cultural ties between the two nations continue to grow.”
