A groundbreaking digital auction app is shaking up Tanzania’s gaming industry—offering users a chance to win high-value prizes with minimal investment and marking a shift in how online competition is experienced.
The platform, known as Piku, recently crowned its first major winner: Sabri Hamis, a Zanzibar-based entrepreneur who walked away with over 5m/- worth of electronics after spending just 1,000/- on the app.
Hamis won a 55-inch LG TV, air conditioner, sound system, a one-year subscription, and a fully paid internet router—all through a single, lowest unique bid, a concept that sets Piku apart from traditional auction models.
“I only spent 1,000/-. It’s hard to believe that such a small amount has changed my life,” Hamis said after his win.
Unlike conventional auctions where the highest bidder wins, Piku rewards the lowest unmatched bid, blending chance, strategy, and digital engagement into a novel user experience.
The app is licensed by the Gaming Board of Tanzania (GBT) and was developed by local tech entrepreneurs with a focus on innovation and accessibility.
“Our goal was to create something different—mentally engaging, exciting, and accessible to everyday users,” said Sia Malewas, Piku’s Business Operations Manager.
GBT Inspector Lucy Katamba confirmed the platform’s compliance with regulations and praised its transparency. She also noted the broader trend it represents in Tanzania’s digital economy.
“Innovations like Piku show how technology is reshaping the gaming sector and expanding the role of digital platforms in the economy,” Katamba said.
Piku is currently available for Android devices, with entry bundles starting at just 1,000/- for 10 bids, scaling up to 100,000/- for premium packages. Prizes are awarded on a weekly, monthly, and quarterly basis.
