Airtel Tanzania, through the Airtel Africa Foundation and in partnership with UNICEF and the Ministry of Education, has conducted a teacher training workshop under the Airtel SMARTWASOMI program. This digital learning initiative aims to enhance access to quality education through technology.

The workshop brought together 60 teachers from primary and secondary schools in Dar es Salaam already linked to the SMARTWASOMI platform. Launched in May 2024 by Prime Minister Kassim Majaliwa, the initiative has connected over 400 schools nationwide. It provides zero-rated access to curriculum-aligned platforms such as the Tanzania Institute of Education (TIE) and Shule Direct, enabling thousands of students and teachers to use quality digital learning resources without incurring data charges.

Speaking at a press conference held at STEM Park in Dar es Salaam on behalf of the TET Director General, Dr. Aneth Komba, the Director of Publications and Research at TIE, Kwangu Masalu, highlighted the central role of teachers in the success of this initiative.

"Teachers are the foundation of our education system. This workshop is designed to build their capacity to deliver digital education, ultimately improving student outcomes. We’re investing in preparing teachers to facilitate quality education that integrates technology," Masalu stated.

Beatrice Singano, Airtel Tanzania’s Director of Regulatory and Corporate Communications, emphasized that Airtel SMARTWASOMI eliminates a key obstacle to digital learning by offering free access to educational content via the Airtel network.

"Today's training gave teachers hands-on experience with the tools available on the platform, including curriculum-aligned content and interactive resources. These tools will simplify lesson planning, enhance subject delivery, and help track student progress—making learning more engaging and efficient," Singano said.

She also noted that the program’s success is built on a strong partnership model. "UNICEF brings expertise in education and child development. Airtel provides the digital infrastructure. The Government ensures the program aligns with national priorities. Each partner plays a vital role in making SMARTWASOMI inclusive and impactful."

Teachers responded enthusiastically to the training. For many, it was their first exposure to a large-scale digital platform tailored for Tanzanian schools.

Neema Avumba, a teacher at Tegeta A Primary School, expressed appreciation: "Before this training, we didn’t realize the potential of digital tools. I now feel empowered to introduce new teaching methods that will excite and engage my students."

Nassoro Shamsi from Mjimwema Primary School shared a similar view: "SMARTWASOMI has opened up possibilities. We now access updated curriculum content and teaching aids without data costs. I’m excited to fully utilize this platform."

Beyond technical training, the workshop encouraged collaboration among teachers, allowing them to share experiences and learn from each other. The broader goal is to develop a network of digital learning ambassadors across Tanzania.

Airtel aims to expand SMARTWASOMI to over 1,000 schools by the end of 2025. This commitment includes ongoing investment in digital infrastructure and collaboration with communities and stakeholders. The initiative supports national efforts to increase digital literacy, address teacher shortages, and promote equitable access to education across all regions.
