TANZANIA now has a reliable and sufficient power supply following the completion of major energy projects, including the Julius Nyerere Hydropower Plant (JNHPP), which alone generates 2,115 megawatts, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for Energy Dr Doto Biteko has said.

Speaking during a tour of natural gas power stations at Kinyerezi I, Kinyerezi I Extension, and Kinyerezi II in Dar es Salaam on July 10, 2025, Dr Biteko said electricity supply has continued to improve, even in areas that previously experienced challenges.

He noted that growing electricity demand, driven by population growth, is being matched by ongoing expansion projects. TANESCO, he said, is planning to increase output at Kinyerezi III from 600MW to 1,000MW.

“This has been made possible through the leadership of President Samia Suluhu Hassan, who has invested heavily in the energy sector,” Dr. Biteko said, adding that the ministry received a record Sh2.3 trillion in the previous budget to strengthen the country’s power infrastructure.

He also praised TANESCO for its improved customer service, particularly in responding quickly to emergencies and enhancing its toll-free call center services.

“There has been great progress in how you serve citizens, especially in dealing with power issues quickly and efficiently,” he said.

During the visit, Dr Biteko also inspected the Kinyerezi Natural Gas Receiving Station and called for increased gas production to meet growing electricity demands.

He was accompanied by key officials, including Energy Ministry Permanent Secretary Eng. Felchesmi Mramba, Ilala District Commissioner Edward Mpogolo, and TANESCO Managing Director Lazaro Twange.
