ZANZIBAR can be transformed into a hub of blue economy advancement with major investments in deep-sea fishing, maritime transport, oil and gas exploration as well as coastal tourism, the ruling party declared yesterday.

CCM presidential candidate Samia Suluhu Hassan yesterday made these remarks at a rally in Nungwi, Unguja North Region, affirming that the blue economy will remain top priority for the Isles as it holds the key to job creation, increased revenues and long-term sustainable development.

“Our goal is to fully unlock the blue economy, from deep sea fishing to modern maritime services and port development, so that the Indian Ocean becomes a true source of prosperity for Zanzibaris,” she stated.

She asserted that the wider economy is expected to expand by 7.0 percent next year, with the government intending to build a self-reliant nation where youth generate income and all citizens prosper.

The CCM manifesto for 2025–2030 clearly outlines bold strategies for Zanzibar, including affordable loans and cooperative training, improved business infrastructure, quality housing, beautification of towns and strengthening of the tourism sector, the presidential candidate noted.

Election Day on October 29, will be peaceful, she said, urging citizens to turn out in large numbers to vote. “Nothing bad will happen on polling day. Go out, cast your vote and return home peacefully. Your security is guaranteed,” she gestured in assurance.

She similarly vowed to safeguard the country’s historic union, describing it the pillar of national unity and development. “The union is the foundation of peace, stability and international respect. We must continue to protect and honour it for future generations,” she emphasized.

The country has also surpassed its target of attracting foreign visitors, with over five million tourists now recorded, such that tourism is flourishing, and with stronger partnerships and investment, local tourist attractions will be top global destinations, she said.

The union presidential candidate praised her Zanzibar counterpart Dr Hussein Ali Mwinyi for delivering impressive progress in five years, pointing at his inclusive leadership and heavy investment in tourism, housing and social services.

In his remarks, the Zanzibar presidential candidate emphasised the need for peace, unity and reconciliation as the foundation of development. “No country can move forward without peace. Our responsibility is to protect the Isles from division and keep working for inclusive growth,” he stated.

Implementation of the CCM manifesto was a success and the coming one would bring even more prosperity, he said, while party secretary general Dr. Asharose Migiro described Samia as a visionary and committed leader whose Royal Tour documentary boosted Tanzania’s international image.

The union has been strengthened under his leadership, she said, also singling out efforts to expand Zanzibar’s tourism industry. Several parliamentary candidates pledged support for the blue economy agenda, with Nungwi contestant Mdoe Haji Kombo urging for more opportunities to be sought for youth, women and persons with disabilities.

Residents at the rally were optimistic over the pledges, with fisherman Ally Rashid saying deep-sea fishing will provide jobs for the youth and improve household incomes.

Mwinyi Khamis, a small trader, said that the community is confident that with Samia, maritime transport and ports will expand opportunities for trade. Asha Omar Bakari, another resident, said she welcomed CCM’s commitment to affordable loans. “This will help women like me expand our businesses and support our families,” she added.
