TANZANIA’s national football team, Taifa Stars, has dropped four places to 107th in the latest FIFA world rankings released yesterday. This slide from their previous position of 103rd is a significant setback for the team.
The decline is largely attributed to Taifa Stars' disappointing performance in their recent 2026 World Cup qualifiers. The team managed a 1-1 draw against Congo on the road before suffering a 1-0 home defeat to Niger, results that have negatively impacted their standing. The lack of wins in these crucial matches has clearly affected their FIFA ranking points, leading to the downward movement.
In stark contrast, their East African neighbours, Uganda, have made a notable ascent, climbing six places from 88th to 82nd. This impressive rise is a direct result of their strong performances in the World Cup qualifiers, where they secured favorable results against Mozambique and Somalia.
Meanwhile, Kenya's national team has also experienced a slight dip, falling two spots from 109th to 111th. This occurred despite them securing one win and one loss in their two recent World Cup qualifiers, showing how competitive the rankings are and how every result, positive or negative, has a direct impact.
Globally, the top three positions have seen a major shake-up. Spain has leaped to the top spot, displacing Argentina, which has fallen to third place. France has also moved up, now holding the second position.
The reshuffling of the top teams globally demonstrates the dynamic nature of international football and how recent results can dramatically alter the hierarchy. On the African continent, Morocco continues to hold the top spot, maintaining its position as the highest-ranked African team at 11th in the world.
Senegal follows as the second-highest ranked African nation, sitting at 18th globally. Their strong positions reflect their consistent performance on both the continental and world stages, and they serve as benchmarks for other African teams aspiring to climb the rankings.
